Day 31: Lomani Island Resort
26 January 2010

A much better night's sleep now we've set the air-con to 20° rather than the 17° it was on when we arrived and woke up refreshed at 9am. Worried we're going to miss the snorkelling trip to the sand bank and reef at 9:30 we quickly made our way over to the restaurant for breakfast. We needn't have worried - things run on Fiji time here and that doesn't just mean GMT +13 hours, it means everything happens when you're ready for it to happen and after a quick breakfast we're on a small boat heading out to sea.

A cloudy start to the day but the heat is omnipresent and we both take the safe option and wear a t-shirt while we snorkelled. We were given some bread to attract the fish and it certainly worked - crumbling the bread in the water in front of your mask brings dozens of fish, all brightly coloured zipping about eating the fragments of bread. We carry on snorkelling around the reef for another half hour or so without the aid of bread and gazed in wonder at the rich diversity of marine life below.

Back to the resort and by now the sun is breaking through the clouds and the heat is building so we choose to lay on our loungers on our patio area which is in the shade (for a while anyway). As the sun advances we retreat into the coolness of our room for the hotest part of the day. At 4pm (or thereabouts, this is Fiji time after all) it's time for some more volleyball with the staff and by now some hazy cloud is cooling everything down a little and with the fresh breeze it makes for an enjoyable game or two.

This evening we had booked one of the tables on the beach to eat our dinner at and as the lobster is back on (Pauly has been fishing today!) had that in a thermadore sauce and I had pork loin chop - both were excellent as usual. The restaurant always has more than just guests eating at it, mainly people from the sister resort further down the beach (probably wanting to get away from the kids for the night!) We finished the evening with a moonlit walk along the beach and a cocktail at the bar before turning in.
